Welcome to Northern Tango Incorporated!
At Northern Tango, we warmly welcome you to a compassionate and vibrant community where the passion for Argentine Tango thrives. Our remarkable journey began in 2004 when Annalise Richardson founded the Northern Tango practica group. Assisting Acho Etchenbere, a local tango teacher, Annalise organised the first-ever tango workshop with interstate teacher Hugo Fernandez from Alma de Tango. This momentous occasion laid the foundation for our community and ignited a love for tango that continues to blossom to this day.
In the same year, Geraldine Li relocated to Darwin from Canberra. She joined Annalise in facilitating peer-to-peer learning and practice at our weekly practica. Although the group was small initially, Annalise and Geraldine’s extensive networks allowed us to invite renowned tango artists from interstate to share their knowledge and passion with the Darwin community.
Throughout the years, Northern Tango has been incredibly fortunate to have passionate individuals who played pivotal roles in shaping our community. Notably, Belinda Glasby, who is now a Tango DJ in New Zealand, initiated our first regular monthly Milonga, which remains a cherished tradition. Belinda Glasby along with Chris Hart and Kelly Hansen collaborated to deliver many workshops and special events each year including the first Tango Retreat at Mary River.
The dedication of Chris Hart and Kelly Hansen and their tireless efforts have provided the Northern Territory community with invaluable opportunities to learn and practice their tango skills. Chris Hart emerged as a skilled Tango DJ. Through their commitment, Northern Tango has flourished, and their contributions have been crucial in ensuring the sustainability, growth and expansion of our community.
In 2010, Carol Richards arrived in Darwin, and her efforts led to the organisation of the first visit by Damian Thompson and Hosanna Heinrich in March 2011. This marked a significant shift in the skill level of the dancers at Northern Tango, as Damian and Hosanna provided much-needed consistency and motivation for improvement. The hunger for more knowledge and skill among the dancers of Northern Tango grew rapidly.
Our journey has been adorned with countless memorable workshops, performances, and special events. We have had the privilege of hosting national and international tango artists, musicians and many special events such as Tango harbour cruises, milongas, combined parties and shows, outdoor events, community demonstrations, performances, and free classes. Our aim has always been to provide a diverse range of experiences for tango enthusiasts in Darwin.
On 22nd March 2023, Northern Tango officially incorporated and established a committee to guide its future endeavours. As we enter our next chapter, we continue to expand our offerings and embrace new opportunities. With three regular monthly milongas and a calendar filled with workshops, performances, and social events, we are dedicated to providing a rich tango experience for all levels of dancers.
Our commitment to accessibility and inclusivity has led us to offer a monthly free introduction to Tango, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience the magic of tango, regardless of their financial circumstances. By eliminating barriers, we have invited individuals of all backgrounds to embark on their tango journey, fostering a sense of unity and belonging within our community.
Join us at Northern Tango and discover the joy, passion, and elegance of Argentine Tango. Whether you are a seasoned dancer or taking your first steps into the world of tango, we welcome you with open arms.
